Vivid Red Mining Town Day Trip in Okayama
The town of Fukiya in Okayama Prefecture prospered thanks to the copper mines in the area. It became a key center of production of a vermillion pigment called bengara. This pigment is made from iron oxide and was used to add deep hues to paint, glazes, and enamels for centuries. The word for the pigment comes from the place name, Bengal. Fukiya has a very striking appearance because the buildings are all painted in this Bengal shade of red.
