Try a Traditional Craft
Many visitors to Japan admire the wide variety of traditional craft products that are available. Some of these items can be used every day and make great gifts and souvenirs to remember your visit to Japan. But did you know that the traditional techniques used to make these crafts by hand are a legacy which has been passed down for hundreds of years?

How many traditional Japanese crafts do you know?

Are you familiar with Japan’s ceramics and lacquerware? How about washi, Japan’s traditional paper? Japan’s woodblock printing art and fabrics like those used in kimonos are well known, but have you ever seen a traditionally crafted butsugu set used in Japanese Buddhist rituals? These are all crafted using uniquely Japanese techniques which all tell their own story.

You can make your own washi postcard in the countryside in our Toyama Prefecture tour!

Another tradition lives on in the technique of maki-e. This is a crucially important process in the decoration of lacquerware. Letters and pictures are created in lacquer. Next, they are sprinkled with metallic powders before the lacquer dries. The powders can be made from metals such as gold, silver and tin. This process dates from as far back as the Nara Period (8th Century C.E.) and has been passed down to the artisans who still use it to this day. The lacquerware is fortified with powdered metal and the craft is infused with centuries of history.

The artform of woodblock printing known as ukiyo-e is famous around the world and it too incorporates many different traditional techniques. These works of art give us an indispensable insight into what everyday life was like in Japan in the past. This artform was actually used as a kind of media for advertising at that time. After all, there were no LED billboards in the seventeenth century!

You can try woodblock printing yourself in the beautiful surrounds of Mt. Oyama. Take a look at our tour here!

Sadly, there is a real risk of these techniques dying out, especially in rural areas of Japan. The number of people who take up these crafts is in sharp decline.

We want as many people as possible to know about these traditional techniques. We at Authentrip offer tours that include craft experiences such as gold-leaf decoration and woodblock printing for visitors to try.

We are currently putting together even more tours which will allow you to have a true hands-on experience and to learn about all kinds of traditional crafts.

Visiting workshops where artisans use these techniques every day is a great way of seeing how the long history of Japan is encapsulated in these crafts. And, of course, trying these craft techniques using your own hands is even more fun!

As you try these craft experiences, you will develop a deep appreciation for Japanese traditions.

We will help you find a fantastic Japanese craft experience that you will never forget. We hope you will remember your craft experience and that you can help keep these traditions alive. That way, we can pass them on to the next generation too.
