Gansho-in Temple
Hokusai Katsushika (1760-1849) was a Japanese ukiyo-e master whose works at the end of the Edo period (1603-1868) greatly influenced French impressionist artists. Hokusai was invited to the town of Obuse by local merchant Kozan Takai and completed the masterpiece of Gansho-in Temple known as ‘The Phoenix Staring in Eight Directions’, at the age of 88! The beauty of the gold leaves and abundance of other vibrant colors used in this large-scale ceiling painting is enough to overwhelm you.

Hokusai-kan Museum
The Hokusai-kan Museum exhibits the works completed by the artist during his stay in Obuse. The festival floats that can be admired at the end of the exhibit were created during a time when Christianity was still banned in Japan. Despite this, if you look closely you can find small angels hidden among the floats architraves. This gives us a unique insight into Hokusai’s temperament as an artist.
The museum shop is also an experience in itself and is a great place to find a unique souvenir.

Tanaka Honke Museum
The Tanaka Honke Museum is the original residence of wealthy merchants during the Edo-era, the Tanaka family, and was often visited by the haiku poet, Issa Kobayashi. The museum is not only host to a collection of over 20,000 astonishing art works, but also lacquerware, clothing items, toys and other everyday items of the time. The collection is often referred to as the Kinsei-no-Shoshoin or “Treasure House”.

The site is spread over 3,000 tsubo or roughly 9,900 square meters. It features Izumi style gardens (Japanese garden with a pond in the center), as well as many other traditional Japanese gardens with beauty that can be enjoyed during all four seasons of the year.

Our Expert on This Area

Hirokazu Tanaka, 12th generation and current head of the Tanaka family (standing in the Tanaka Honke Museum gardens, spring time)

The Tanaka family (including myself) have run our family business for many generations. We have been part of Suzaka since 1733 when we first established roots here. The museum here houses a precious collection left by my ancestors. On the advice of experts, the entire residence is also open to the public. Near the museum, you will find temples with over seven hundred years of history, as well as sake breweries where you can sample local brews. We also have two magnificent waterfalls and beautiful traditional buildings lining the city streets. If you get the chance, I hope you can come and discover the beauty of Suzaka, Shinshu!
