Amanosan Kongou-ji
Built during Japan’s Tempyo era (729_749), Amanosan Kongou-ji Temple boasts four national treasures, along with many designated important cultural properties including the Romon Gate, Kondo Main Hall, and the architectural wonder of the temple’s two-storied pagoda. A far cry from the swarms of tourists as seen in Kyoto and Nara, the Kongou-ji Temple is a peaceful natural paradise where one can relax and unwind. The temple’s inner garden boasts an abundance of flora and greenery where one can forget the troubles of everyday life by looking out upon the green moss lawn.

Amami Onsen Nanten-en
The Shioyu building was designed in 1913 by the architect of Tokyo Station, Kingo Tatsuno, which was dismantled and later reconstructed in Amami as a Japanese-style Inn Nanten-en in 1935. Besides relaxing in calming atmosphere during your stay, you can also delight in the hot springs and their beautifying benefits, take a stroll around the rich natural surroundings in the Japanese garden, and enjoy the seasonal Japanese cuisine. The staff is very hospitable providing their guests with a map of the local area, cultural experiences, English manuals on how to wear yukata (Japanese summer kimono) and how to take a bath in Japanese style etc. This is the place where people of any nationality can spend an unforgettable time.

Obana Ryokan
Situated on a river bank, with all rooms in a Japanese style, this inn is brimming with Japanese ambiance and is appealing for its location, food, and cleanliness. While an established inn with a history of over 60 years since it was founded, Obana Ryokan has been given an complete makeover, resulting in a fresh impression. It puts efforts into its meals so that guests can enjoy authentic kaiseki cuisine inspired by the changing seasons. Guests will also find the location appealing. The inn is located in a safe environment just a minute's walk from the station, and a shrine and a shopping center can be found nearby. Guests can relax and enjoy morning walks or strolling around the streets late at night, encountering the real Japan in a way that cannot be enjoyed in well-known tourist destinations.

Konpon Daito
The highlight of the Danjo Garan, at the heart of Koya-san, is the Konpon Daito. Built as a center for the study of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism, it has been a holy site for approximately 1,200 years. Standing 49 meters tall, the vermillion Konpon Daito displays a sense of majesty and dignity. Together with the central statue of the Dainichi Nyorai, statues of the four protector Buddhas and paintings of the sixteen bodhisattvas on the surrounding pillars and walls form an unusual three-dimensional mandala. The moment you step inside, the scent of purifying incense surrounds you and you can feel all your worries and troubles fade away, leaving only calm behind.

Okunoin
Okunoin is the sacred area, where Kobo Daishi (known as Kukai) is believed to have entered eternal meditation. You can discover the mystical atmosphere along the path leading up the mausoleum, with over 200,000 grave stones of historical figures such as Maeda Toshinaga, along with the graves of corporate companies like Panasonic are spread between cedars aged hundreds of years old. When you cross the bridge leading to Kobo Daishi Mausoleum, it seems like you enter into an otherworldly realm. There you can feel a profound energy throughout every part of your body. Furthermore, there is a looking well on the path to mausoleum, which according to legend, anyone whose reflection doesn’t appear in the water of the well is destined to die within 3 years. Do you have the courage to take a peek into the well?

Shojoshin-in
Shojoshin-in was built by Kobo Daishi during the Tencho era (824-834) to establish Mount Koya as a place for studying the esoteric teachings of Shingon Buddhism, and the building, whose traditional architectural style is said to have been used as a reference when building Kongobu-ji Temple, the head temple on Mount Koya, still remains today. When you step through the entrance, you are greeted by large iron cauldrons, a rarity nowadays, and to the side of which there is a photo spot that is said to bring happiness. The rooms are traditional Japanese rooms that have a tatami mat floor and a futon to sleep on. After savoring the traditional Buddhist Shojin cuisine of Mount Koya, spend a soul soothing evening here.。

Our Expert on This Area

Mr.Pascal and Ms.Olivia(from Belgium)

We think Koyasan is the only place where you can have the experience of sharing temple food and meditation with priests. This place is quiet and relaxing, which is different from other areas of Japan. We went on the night tour to the graves and it was very interesting and impressive. The priests were extremely charismatic, opposed to expectations.

Mr.Ratnaj (from Australia)

I came to Koyasan to enjoy a spiritual experience. There are many temples in Kyoto as well, but they are overcrowded with tourists. Koyasan is on top of a mountain, and there are not so many tourists here, which makes for the perfect spiritual experience.
