Matsumoto Castle
Matsumoto Castle was built in 1593-1594 and has the oldest keep in Japan. It is a symbol of Matsumoto city, and is designated as a national treasure. Because its appearance is jet black, it is popularly known to the locals as the 'Crow Castle'.There are steep stairs inside the castle, but since it appears almost as it did when it was built, it is well worth seeing!Wouldn’t you like to enjoy feeling like a warlord as you take in the beautiful scenery from the castle keep?

Tsumago
Located on the Nakasendo highway that connects Tokyo and Kyoto, 'Tsumago” is the forty-second post town along the road from Tokyo. It was the first town in Japan to have its townscape preserved, and the rows of old houses that still splendidly remain are a spectacular sight! In the autumn, you can enjoy Japanese chestnut sweets, such as 'kurikinton', 'kurikintsuba', and 'kurimanju'.

Gero Onsen(Hot Springs)
Gero Onsen is the most famous hot spring resort in Japan. Gero's hot water is a natural hot spring that flows at a high temperature of 84 degrees Celsius (184 degrees Fahrenheit). The water quality is an alkaline simple hot spring. The colorlessly transparent, faintly aromatic and very mellow hot water leaves your skin velvety smooth. In the river that flows through the streets of Gero Onsen, there is also a mixed bathing open-air bath that is open 24 hours a day! (Please be sure to wear a bathing suit when bathing) There are lots of hot spring foot baths you can use without removing your clothes, so why not enjoy trying the different waters in this famous Japanese hot spring town?

Fake Food Making Experience
It’s famous the world over as “Japanese realistic art”, so would you like to try your hand at making a food replica in Gujo Hachiman, famous for having the largest production volume in Japan? This time around, you will experience making 'tempura' and 'lettuce'. Although it’s surprisingly easy, you’ll be amazed that you can make it look exactly like the real thing! As souvenirs, why not buy straps of your favorite food sample, too?

Gujo Hachiman
It has prospered as the castle town of Gujo Hachiman Castle, and has many places of interest such as the townscape of preserved old Japanese houses, beautiful waterways, pocket parks (small parks) that make use of water, and Gujo Hachiman Old Town Hall which is a registered tangible cultural property. If you have time, please enjoy exploring the townscape.

Kei-chan
'Kei-chan' is a regional cuisine of Gifu Prefecture in which chicken is seasoned with local miso and fried and eaten with vegetables. It is characterized by the differing flavors of each home and restaurant depending on which part of the chicken is cooked and the miso used for seasoning. Enjoy the taste of kei-chan exquisitely entwined with miso!

The Matsumoto Castle is the epitome of beauty. You will feel like you have traveled back in time to the olden days of Japan in Tsumago. Making Gujo-Hachiman food samples is an easy to do and rare process. This activity will surely create some great memories. I am sure that everyone will be able to enjoy this tour in which I have included all the awesome sightseeing spots and experiences that I have experienced and highly recommend. Gero Hot Spring is one of my top recommendations! The quality of the spring water in this hot spring is amongst the top of hot springs in Japan. Please come and achieve beautiful skin by dipping in this hot spring.

Hirokazu Tanaka, 12th generation and current head of the Tanaka family (standing in the Tanaka Honke Museum gardens, spring time)

The Tanaka family (including myself) have run our family business for many generations. We have been part of Suzaka since 1733 when we first established roots here. The museum here houses a precious collection left by my ancestors. On the advice of experts, the entire residence is also open to the public. Near the museum, you will find temples with over seven hundred years of history, as well as sake breweries where you can sample local brews. We also have two magnificent waterfalls and beautiful traditional buildings lining the city streets. If you get the chance, I hope you can come and discover the beauty of Suzaka, Shinshu!
