11 Days/10 Nights in Eastern Japan
All of the picturesque beauty that Eastern Japan has to offer. A mountaintop temple, pine covered islets, and icy caves. The Tohoku is being revitalized and you can be a part of it.
Narusawa Ice Cave
A natural corridor that feels like walking into a freezer! This narrow cave cooled by cold drafts was created long ago by volcanic activity. It was used as a place to store food because of its constant temperature, even in the summer months. Now you can explore this legacy of Mt. Fuji’s lava flows and take a look at the stalagmites and stalactites. Watch your head, though!
Let's Try Ukiyoe Printing
Ukiyoe prints began to spread among the common people around 1680 and are a traditional Japanese art form. Mt. Oyama has been featured in more than 200 Ukiyoe prints from the Edo period alone, including from well-known artists such as Hiroshige Utagawa and Hokusai Katsushika, as well as paintings by van Gogh. Now you can try your hand at these ukiyoe prints for yourself!! The process is quite simple. Feel free to take your finished ukiyoe print home with you as a souvenir by which to remember your travels.
Matsushima Bay is dotted with over 250 pine covered islands and is one of the top three scenic views of Japan along with Miyajima in Hiroshima and Amanohashidate in Kyoto. The islands have inspired people for centuries, including the famous haiku poet, Matsuo Basho.
Mt. Kinka-zan Koganeyama Shrine
Surrounded by the sea, the only way to access the secluded Mt. Kinka-zan is by water taxi. Here, deer are regarded as Gods, with 450 deer roaming the barely 10 square km island. In Japan’s oldest historical records known as “Kojiki”, the God Kanayamahiko-no-kami (God of treasure) is worshipped. It was said that; “visit the temple for 3 consecutive years and you will never want of money for the rest of your life”. Authentrip organizes the opportunity to participate in a traditional “Ogomakito” (prayer ceremony) experience in the hope that you too will go home with the Midas touch.
At the end of the 11th century, in order to bring about the “land of Buddha” where neither friend nor foe exists (an ideal society according to the teachings of Buddha), Kiyohira Fujiwara, his son Motohira and grandson Hidehira built Hiraizumi over a period of 100 years. The most famous structures of the city are Chuson-ji Temple and Motsu-ji Temple.
The Chuson-ji Temple Konjiki-do (the golden hall) is covered in gold leaf both inside and out. The interior is decorated with iridescent shell inlay, delicate metal fittings and maki-e (gold and silver illustrations sprinkled over lacquer. The sheer beauty of the Konjiki-do is mesmerizing. Also extremely interesting is the building known as Oi-do which encases the Konjiki-do. . The Oi-do was created to conceal the Konjiki-do in order to protect its beauty, a truly novel idea (the Oi-do has been rebuilt, however the original wooden Oi-do built in 1288 has been relocated to a site nearby).
Risshaku-ji is also known as the Mountain Temple. Passing by countless cedar trees on the way up to this historical place, you can feel the sense of solitude that this remote location provided. The views from Godaido Hall are said to be some of the best in Northern Japan. A thousand years ago, a flame was carried to this temple from the Enryaku-ji monastery near Kyoto. It still burns brightly to this day.
This breathtaking location is an essential destination for mountaineers and nature lovers. In the winter, the trees turn into snow monsters because of the jagged icicles and heavy snow that cover them. In spring and summer, the monsters disappear and the beautiful landscape opens out before your eyes.
